This blog was created with the intent of assisting English teachers who are tired of reading poorly developed argumentative essays. We hope that the content of this blog will help teachers show their students that persuasion is part of our everyday life and that persuasive devices are tremendously effective in swaying the opinions of others. By exposing our students to different forms of persuasion such as advertisements, speeches, letters to the editor, sermons and newspaper and magazine articles, we believe that our students will be able to get a better grasp of the concept.

Objectives: Students should be able to

• Identify the different forms of persuasion

• Develop an argument using at least 3 – 4 devices

• Appreciate the role of the devices in supporting their position.

Prerequisite: Student have had prior knowledge of the persuasive writing technique in terms of  

                      being able to define and give an example of the technique.

Introduction:

Teacher will begin class by prompting students’ knowledge of advertisements, debates, speeches, letters to the editors, articles and sermons.

Activities

Teachers will place students in five groups.  Each group will be assigned to either:

            a.  listen and view a speech (audio-visual)

            b.  read a letter to the editor

            c.  listen to an advertisement

            d.  listen and view a debate

            e.  read a newspaper or magazine article.

Students will be asked to view, listen or read and make observation on the devices used by the speaker or writer and make constructive comments on the use and effectiveness of the devices employed.

Evaluation

Students will be assessed by the response they provide on the effectiveness of the devices employed.
